Applications of activated carbon |
|
Over the years, industrial development and urban congestion has had a heavy
impact on the environment. There is a need to remove pollutants and reduce
harmful emissions. Carbon is 'activated' by exposure to high temperatures
to
increase its porosity. It can trap pollutants in waste water and atmospheric
gases
- enhancing quality, removing dioxins and other contaminants. Demand for
activated carbon has been increasing dramatically for these and other uses.
Activated carbon has wide-ranging applications - virtually every product
manufactured today has been improved upon at least once by the use of activated
carbon. It is used in the purification of many substances, and in a myriad
of
industries: food, pharmaceuticals, chemical, manufacturing, public work
projects,
as well as familiar applications like cigarette filters.
Activated carbon is used in sophisticated household products, and help
to enhance
the health and safety of our daily lives. It is found in a refrigerator's
deodorizing
unit, and in the water purifier - both are necessities of home life. Functional
activated carbon acts as a deodorizer and is used in water treatment and
in
refuse disposal plants.
